Strange Buildings - Part VII: Habitat 67 - Montreal, Canada

Habitat 67 is a housing complex and landmark located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Its design was created by architect Moshe Safdie based on his master's thesis at McGill University and built as part of Expo 67.

Housing was one of the main themes of Expo 67.
Habitat 67 then became a thematic pavilion visited by thousands of visitors who came from around the world.
During Expo 67 it was also the temporary residence of the many dignitaries coming to Montreal.

It was designed to integrate the variety and diversity of scattered private homes with the economics and density of a modern apartment building.
Modular, interlocking concrete forms define the space.
The project was designed to create affordable housing with close but private quarters, each equipped with a garden.
The building was believed to illustrate the new lifestyle people would live in increasingly crowded cities around the world.

The complex was originally meant to be vastly larger.
Ironically, due to its architectural cachet, demand for the building's units have made them expensive rather than "affordable" as originally envisioned.

The building is owned by its tenants, who formed a limited partnership that purchased the building from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in 1985.

Darwin Awards - On the Piste

Named in honor of Charles Darwin, the father of evolution, the Darwin Awards commemorate those who improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it.

Here's one of the most recent stories:

2008 Darwin Award Nominee - Confirmed True by Darwin
(2 February 2008, Italy)

David, 46, was sliding down an Italian ski slope one night, riding on padding that he had removed from the safety barriers at the bottom of the run.
It did not occur to him that it might be dangerous to sled down the same slope from which he had stolen protective padding.

Sauze d'Oulx is one of five villages that make up the "Milky Way" ski area in northern Italy.
Popular with British skiers, the resort is known for its party atmosphere.
A ski resort spokesperson said, "The men had all been drinking when they tore off the padding, and ironically..."

...they careened straight into the bare barriers at the bottom of the piste (groomed slope).
David died from head and chest injuries inflicted by the unpadded metal.
Two of his friends survived with medical attention.
Another Darwin Award candidate is still missing after he wandered away "bloodied and distressed."
