Strange Buildings - Part XV: Nakagin Capsule Tower - Tokyo, Japan
The Nakagin Capsule Tower is a mixed-use residential and office tower designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa and located in Shimbashi, Tokyo, Japan.
Completed in 1972, the building is a rare built example of Japanese Metabolism, a movement that became emblematic of Japan's postwar cultural resurgence.
The building was the world's first example of capsule architecture built for actual use. The building is still in use as of 2010, but has fallen into disrepair.
The building is actually composed of two interconnected concrete towers, respectively eleven and thirteen floors, which house 140 prefabricated modules (or "capsules") which are each self-contained units. Each capsule measures 2.3 m (8 ft) × 3.8 m (12 ft) × 2.1 m (7 ft) and functions as a small living or office space. Capsules can be connected and combined to create larger spaces. Each capsule is connected to one of the two main shafts only by four high-tension bolts and is designed to be replaceable. No units have been replaced since the original construction.
The original target demographic were bachelor salarymen. The compact apartments included a wall of appliances and cabinets built in to one side, including a kitchen stove, a refrigerator, a television set, and a reel-to-reel tape deck. A bathroom unit, about the size of an aircraft lavatory, is set into an opposite corner. A large circular window over a bed dominates the far end of the room.

Darwin Awards - Glacier Erasure
Named in honor of Charles Darwin, the father of evolution, the Darwin Awards commemorate those who improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it.
Here's one of the most recent stories:
Glacier Erasure
2010 Darwin Award Nominee
Another account from the archives of a 30-year ER MD.
In the late fall and early winter months, snow-covered mountains become infested with hunters. One ambitious pair climbed high up a mountain in search of their quarry. The trail crossed a small glacier that had crusted over. The lead hunter had to stomp a foot-hold in the snow, one step at a time, in order to cross the glacier.
Somewhere near the middle of the glacier, his next stomp hit not snow but a rock. The lead hunter lost his footing and fell. Down the crusty glacier he zipped, off the edge and out of sight.
Unable to help, his companion watched him slide away. After a while, he shouted out, "Are you OK?"
"Yes!" came the answer.
Reasoning that it was a quick way off the glacier, the second hunter plopped down and accelerated down the ice, following his friend. There, just over the edge of the glacier, was his friend...holding onto the top of a tree that barely protruded from the snow.
There were no other treetops nearby, nothing to grab, nothing but a hundred-foot drop onto the rocks below. As the second hunter shot past the first, he uttered his final epitaph: a single word, which we may not utter lest our mothers soap our mouths.

Ora bolas!

Darwin Awards - Tiny Electric Fence
Named in honor of Charles Darwin, the father of evolution, the Darwin Awards commemorate those who improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it.
Here's one of the most recent stories:
Tiny Electric Fence
2010 Darwin Award Nominee - 10 January 2010, Brazil
An electrical discharge made toast of municipal guard Arthur de Souza Coelho, 47, on Sunday evening.
According to police reports, he had installed a tiny electric fence around his car to protect against the frequent robberies that occur in his neighborhood in Belem, Para.
Then (direct translation from Portuguese) "he forgot that he had left the fence on and he ended dying with the electric shock."
After all, we are all dying, but some end sooner than others.

Strange Buildings - Part XIV: Manchester Civil Justice Centre, Manchester - England
The Manchester Civil Justice Centre houses the Manchester County Court and the Manchester District Registry of the High Court, as well as Manchester City Magistrates’ Family Courts, the District Probate Registry and the Regional and Area Offices of the Court Service.
It was constructed between 2003 and 2007 and is located in the Spinningfields district to the west of Deansgate.
The western side of the 80 metres (260 ft), 17-storey building faces the River Irwell, which marks the border between the cities of Manchester and Salford.
It is currently the joint 6th tallest building in the city centre.
The entrance to the building opens onto Bridge Street.
It was designed by Australian architects Denton Corker Marshall with engineers Mott MacDonald.
The building is notable for the "fingers" at each end that are cantilevered over the lower levels, and it is rumoured that Barrie Marshall sketched the entire building by hand and that very little has deviated from his drawings.
On the western side is an 11,000-square-metre (120,000 sq ft) suspended glass wall, the largest in Europe.

Diário de uma Dieta
Querido Diário,
Hoje começo a fazer dieta. Preciso perder 8 kg.
Sinto-me mais leve.
Ainda me sinto fantástica.
Estou a começar a odiar salada. Sinto-me uma vaca a mastigar erva.
Odeio a Maria.
Preciso acalmar-me e voltar a concentrar-me. É a minha meta.
Emagreci 250 gramas.
Parece a gozar! A semana inteira a comer erva. O filha da p… chamou-me gorda e velha!
Anotação:
Procurar outro médico.
Oitavo dia de dieta:
Fui acordada hoje por um frango assado. Juro!
Hoje, o pessoal do escritório ficou a olhar-me de forma esquisita.
O frango assado voltou a acordar-me, desta vez a dançar a dança-do-ventre. Passei o dia no sofá a ver televisão.
Odeio a Cláudia Vieira.
O frango apresentou-me uns amigos. O pão é um tipo impecável, e a torta, embora meio enfezada, é um doce.
Décimo-quinto dia de dieta:
Matei a Cláudia Vieira!
Décimo-sexto dia:
Não estou mais de dieta. Aborrecida com o frango, comi-o junto com o pão. E arrematei com a torta. Ela realmente era um doce...
Frase do dia:

Here's one of the most recent stories:
Teeming with Crocodiles
2010 Darwin Award Nominee - Confirmed True by Darwin
1 January 2010, South Africa
Pop quiz, class.
Do you or don't you go swimming in the crocodile-infested Limpopo?
Do, or don't, leave your friends on the banks of the great grey-green Olifants River (main tributary of the Limpopo) and swim in its limpid waters not once, not twice, but three times the day you are finally devoured by that old crocodile?
Let's just say it was a short New Year for Mariska B., 27, a waitress and former swimmer.
According to a long-time resident of Phalaborwa, locals know, "You don't even put a toe in the river. It's teeming with crocodiles and hippos."
This local, on her third refreshing dip of the day, didn't have time to scream or struggle.
Friends saw just a ripple on the water where seconds before she had been swimming.
Did I mention that swimming was strictly prohibited?
Police searched for Mariska's body with long poles, and with the chemical detectors known as sniffer dogs, but found nothing.
The cycle of life continues.

Darwin Awards - Dying to Go
Named in honor of Charles Darwin, the father of evolution, the Darwin Awards commemorate those who improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it.
Here's one of the most recent stories:
Dying To Go
2009 Darwin Award, 1st Runner Up - 12 April 2009, Florida
Traffic was moving slowly on southbound I-95.
Shawn M. had recently left a Pompano Beach bar, and now he was stuck in traffic.
As the saying goes, you don't buy beer--you just rent it, and Shawn couldn't wait another moment to relieve himself.
"I need to take a leak," he told his friends.
Traffic was deadlocked, so the waterlogged man climbed out of the car, put his hand on the divider, and jumped over the low concrete wall...only to fall 65 feet to his death.
"He probably thought there was a road, but there wasn't," said a Fort Lauderdale police spokes-man.
The car was idling on an overpass above the railroad lines.
His mother shared her thoughts.
"Shawn didn't do a whole lot for a living. He got along on his charm, just like his father."
Though his death was tragic, Shawn's downfall proves the old adage: "Look before you leak."

No Air
Tell me how I'm supposed 2 breathe with no air?
If I should die before I wake
It's cause you took my breath away
Losing you is like living in a world with no air
Oh
I'm here alone didn't wanna leave
My heart won't move it's incomplete
If there was a way that I could make you understand
But how do you expect me to live alone with just me? cause my world revolves around you it's so hard for me to breathe
Tell me how I'm supposed to breathe with no air?
Can't live, can't breathe with no air
It's how I feel whenever you ain't there
It's no air, no air
Got me out here in the water so deep
Tell me how you gon be without me?
If you ain't here I just can't breathe
It's no air, no air
No air, air
I walk, I ran, I jump, I flew
Right off the ground to float to you
WIth no gravity to hold me down forreal
But somehow I'm still alive inside
You took my breathe but I survived
I don't how but I don't even care
So how do you expect me to live alone with just me? cause my world revolves around you it's so hard for me to breathe
Tell me how I'm supposed 2 breathe with no air?
Can't live, can't breathe with no air

Got me out here in the water so deep

It's no air, no air

Darwin Awards - 2009 Award Winner - Crushing Debt
Named in honor of Charles Darwin, the father of evolution, the Darwin Awards commemorate those who improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it.
Here's one of the most recent stories:
Crushing Debt
2009 Darwin Award Winner - 26 September 2009, Belgium
The city of Dinant is the backdrop for this rare Double Darwin Award.
Two bankrobbers attempting to make a sizeable withdrawal from an ATM machine died when they overestimated the quantity of dynamite needed for the explosion.
The blast demolished the building the bank was housed in.
Nobody else was in the building at the time of the attack.
Robber One was rushed to the hospital with severe head trauma; he died shortly after arrival.
Investigators initially assumed that his accomplice had managed a getway, but the second bungler's body was excavated from the debris twelve hours later.
Would-be Robbers One and Two weren't exactly impoverished--their getaway car was a BMW.

The Christmas Tree Legends
The custom of a Christmas tree, undecorated, is believed to have begun in Germany, in the first half of the 700s.
The earliest story relates how British monk and missionary St. Boniface was preaching a sermon on the Nativity to a tribe of Germanic Druids outside the town of Geismar. To convince the idolaters that the oak tree was not sacred and inviolable, the "Apostle of Germany" felled one on the spot. Toppling, it crushed every shrub in its path except for a small fir sapling. A chance event can lend itself to numerous interpretations, and legend has it that Boniface, attempting to win converts, interpreted the fir's survival as a miracle, concluding, "Let this be called the tree of the Christ Child." Subsequent Christmases in Germany were celebrated by planting fir saplings.
The history of the modern Christmas tree goes back to 16th century Germany. In Alsace (Elsass), dated 1561, states that "no burgher shall have for Christmas more than one bush of more than eight shoes' length." The decorations hung on a tree in that time, the earliest we have evidence of, were "roses cut of many-colored paper, apples, wafers, gilt, sugar." Around Strasbourg there was a widespread practice of bringing trees (evergreens, not necessarily a fir-tree) into houses for decoration during Christmastide.
The modern custom is also connected with the Paradise tree hung with apples, present in the medieval religious plays. The decorations could symbolize the Christian Hosts. Instead of trees, various wooden pyramidal structures were also used. In 17th century the Christmas tree spread through Germany and Scandinavia. Eventually the tree was extensively decorated, first with candles and candies, then with apples and confections, later with anything glittering mass-produced paraphernalia.
The success of Christmas tree in Protestant countries was enhanced by the legend which attributed the tradition to Martin Luther himself. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther first added lighted candles to a tree. Walking toward his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles. In England the tradition was made popular by the German Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria. The German immigrants brought the Christmas tree to America in 17th century. Public outdoors Christmas trees with electric candles were introduced in Finland in 1906, and in USA (New York) in 1912. The claim of the Pennsylvania Germans to have initiated the Christmas tree custom in America is undisputed today. And it's in the diary of Matthew Zahm of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, under the date December 20, 1821, that the Christmas tree and its myriad decorations received their first mention in the New World.
It is no surprising that, like many other festive Christmas customs, the tree was adopted so late in America. To the New England Puritans, Christmas was sacred. The Pilgrims' second governor, William Bradford, wrote that he tried hard to stamp out "pagan mockery" of the observance, penalizing any frivolity. The influential Oliver Cromwell preached against "the heathen traditions" of Christmas carols, decorated trees and any joyful expression that desecrated "that sacred event."

The Dancing House is the nickname given to the Nationale-Nederlanden building in downtown Prague, Czech Republic.
It was designed by Croatian-Czech architect Vlado Milunić in co-operation with Canadian architect Frank Gehry on a vacant riverfront plot (where the previous building had been destroyed during the Bombing of Prague in 1945).
The building was designed in 1992 and completed in 1996.
The very non-traditional design was controversial at the time.
Czech president Václav Havel, who lived for decades next to the site, had supported it, hoping that the building would become a center of cultural activity.
Originally named Fred and Ginger (after Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers - the house vaguely resembles a pair of dancers) the house stands out among the Neo-Baroque, Neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings for which Prague is famous.
Others have nicknamed it "Drunk House".

Darwin Awards - Sparkleberry Lane
Named in honor of Charles Darwin, the father of evolution, the Darwin Awards commemorate those who improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it.
Here's one of the most recent stories:
Sparkleberry Lane
2009 Darwin Award Nominee
(31 July 2009, South Carolina)
Two disguised men entered the Sprint store on Sparkleberry Lane, pulled out guns, and stole wallets, purses, and credit cards before ordering the employees into a bathroom.
Both men fled, but they could not flee from their own stupidity.
24-year-old James Thomas had disguised himself by spray-painting his own face.
Yes, in order to conceal his identity during the robbery, Thomas covered his skin with paint--a toxic substance with well muttknown inhalation risks.
He began having trouble breathing (surprise!) and died wheezing shortly after the robbery took place.
Witnesses were certain as to the identity of their assailant; had he lived, he would have been charged with armed robbery.

Finalmente é a tua vez!

Male or Female?
You might not have known this...but a lot of non-living objects are actually either male or female. Here are some examples:
FREEZER BAGS: They are male, because they hold everything in...but you can see right through them.
PHOTOCOPIERS: These are female, because once turned off...it takes a while to warm them up again.
They are an effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed...but can also wreak havoc if you push the wrong Buttons.
TYRES: Tyres are male, because they go bald easily and are often over inflated.
HOT AIR BALLOONS: Also a male object... because to get them to go anywhere.....you have to light a fire under their butt.
SPONGES: These are female...because they are soft.......squeezable and retain water.
WEB PAGES: Female...because they're constantly being looked at and frequently getting hit on.
TRAINS: Definitely male... because they always use the same old lines for picking up people.
EGG TIMERS: Egg timers are female because....over time...all the weight shifts to the bottom.
HAMMERS: Male... because in the last 5000 years.....they've hardly changed at all...and are occasionally handy to have around.
